Matt Mills, PhD
Managing Director, Research & Development
Committed to do well by doing good.
As the Managing Director of Research & Development for Sudoc, Matt Mills seeks to transform the vast potential of TAML™ catalysts into products that serve a wide variety of needs. These products will be developed through value-driven research and development while maintaining a keen focus on stakeholder needs.
In 2011, Matt joined Professor Terry Collins, a Sudoc inventor & founder, at Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied the ins and outs of TAML™ chemistry for five years. Matt worked on a variety of synthesis procedures and became adept at the production of a variety of TAML™ formulations. During his time at Carnegie Mellon, he was awarded a Steinbrenner Institute Graduate Fellowship, as well as the Richard King Mellon Presidential Fellowship in the Life Sciences.
As a former high school science teacher, he particularly enjoyed mentoring a number of undergraduate students in research. He developed an affinity for collaborative research, resulting in seventeen publications, including five first-author papers.
After receiving his Ph.D. in 2016, Matt expanded his catalysis experience during a postdoctoral appointment with Professor Wesley Bernskoetter at the University of Missouri, studying hydrogenation and dehydrogenation catalysts for energy storage applications. Prior to joining SUDOC, he spent three years at Phillips 66 focusing on novel remediation applications in the Sustainability Group.
Matt’s career has been unconventional. After joining the Marine Corps Reserve, he was deployed to Iraq twice during his pursuit of B.S. degrees in chemistry and secondary education. Upon graduating summa cum laude from California University of Pennsylvania, he taught high school science both stateside and abroad at an American school in Fes, Morocco. While working as a laboratory technician, he realized a desire for a scientific research-oriented career and returned to school for his doctorate.
A passion for creative science, innovative applications, and a pursuit of sustainable solutions is what attracted Matt to SUDOC. In his spare time, Matt enjoys woodworking, beer brewing, gardening, and playing with his three young sons.
